Crime in Bulgaria's capital decreases- Interior Ministry
The number of criminal acts committed in Sofia has decreased by 13.9 per cent in 2006, Interior Minister Roumen Petkov told a press conference.
Public murders were three times fewer as compared to numbers for 2005, said Petkov.
Traffic accidents also decreased, he said as quoted by Focus news agency. Nearly 17 per cent fewer people were harmed in traffic accidents, as compared to the figures for the preceding year.
More than 28 per cent of burglaries and 21 per cent of car thefts have been uncovered, said Petkov.
Petkov said that the newly set up systems for video monitoring in central Sofia played an important role in dealing with crime. Using the systems, police were able to find 700 missing vehicles and to detain 21 drug dealers.
In 2006, 18 Sofia police officers were dismissed on charges of corruption, said Petkov. All cases are still investigated.
