Teacher wages in Bulgaria to be increased

Nearly 13 million leva from budget 2007 would be allocated for the increase of the wages of teachers, Education Minister Daniel Vulchev said.

One in ten teachers would receive a wage increase. The factors used to determine who would benefit have not been presented yet, Focus news agency reported.

Vulchev said that one of the options took into account the evaluation of regional education inspectors.

The minister also discussed free text books for students from first to seventh grade. Introduction of free text books was possible no sooner than 2008, Vulchev said.

At the moment only students up to fourth grade benefit from free textbooks, Darik Radio reported. Several weeks ago unions demanded free education materials for students from fifth to seventh grade as well.

Vulchev said that such initiative would need additional 21 million leva, which could not be provided from budget 2007.

On September 15, 2006 nearly 2000 more first graders would start school compared to the figures for 2005, Vulchev said.
