Bulgaria celebrates 170th anniversary of national hero Vasil Levski’s birth
Bulgaria commemorates the 170th anniversary of Vasil Levski’s birth on July 18 with celebrations all over the country.
Levski is a national hero for the people of Bulgaria, who call him “the Apostle of Freedom.”
The name refers to his great significance for the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule in the 19th century.
Vasil Levski was born on July 18 1837 in the southern Bulgarian town of Karlovo.
He was a Bulgarian revolutionary, ideologist, strategist and theoretician of the Bulgarian national revolution.
He created a network of revolutionary committees all over Bulgaria and was among the main figures in the organised revolutionary movement for the liberation of the Bulgarians.
