Bulgaria to introduce green card system for foreign employees
Bulgaria would start issuing green cards to foreign employees in April, allowing them to live and work legally in the country, Labour Minister Emilia Maslarova said in a media statement.
Maslarova and Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev met on February 8 with representatives of employers' organisations to discuss ways of attracting foreign employees and the implementation of projects financed by the European Union, chinaview.cn said.
"The Bulgarian green card system will be in line with migration policies of the EU," Maslarova said.
Business was expecting a work force shortage, despite the fact that Bulgaria counted 260 000 unemployed. This was why the country needed to attract more qualified foreign employees, head of the Confederation of Employers and Industrialists in Bulgaria, Ivo Prokopiev, was quoted as saying.
An annual study by the Bulgarian Industrial Association (BIA) on the business climate in the country, which was released in December, showed that the shortage of qualified work force was growing dramatically, chinaview.cn said. According to BIA, half the companies on the market had difficulties employing qualified personnel.
