Bulgarian part of team that finds largest-ever planet
An international team of astronomers including Bulgaria’s Georgi Mandushev has discovered the largest planet ever found by scientists.
The planet is outside our solar system, in the Hercules constellation, 1435 light years from Earth, netinfo.bg reported, quoting the BBC.
It makes a full circle round its orbit for nearly three and a half days which means that it has a short year, lasting less than one Earth week.
The name of the planet is TrES-4. It is 70 per cent larger than Jupiter but has lower density, 0.2 g/cubic metres.
Its surface temperature is 1300 decrees Celsius because of its closeness to the mother star. BBC quoted Mandushev saying that this is the largest exo planet.
Mandushev had a leading role in the discovery. Details of the discovery will be included in the scientific publication Astrophysical Journal under the title TrES-4: A Transiting Hot Jupiter of Very Low Density.
