Chimimport picked to upgrade airport in Russia
Bulgarian company Chimimport was picked as the strategic partner for the modernisation of Kazan international airport in the Republic of Tatarstan, airport manager Petr Trubaev was quoted by Russian daily Kommersant as saying on June 3.
The airport has already struck an agreement with Chimimport. The Bulgarian company is scheduled to carry out construction works estimated in the 250-400 million leva range. The final value of the deal will be specified once the airport endorses the final version of the agreement.
Tatarstan prime minister Rustam Minnikhanov was quoted by Kommersant as saying that Kazan's airport was the city's weak point. Upgrade works would be completed by 2012, a year ahead of Kazan’s hosting of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) 2013 World University Championships.
Tatarstan president Mintimer Shaimiev had promised FISU members that by that point, the airport would meet the organisation's requirements. The event, according to observers, will attract large-scale investments into the city, estimated by Minnihanov at 490 million euro, as well as boost tourist numbers.
