Conference tourism in Bulgaria generates further revenue if properly developed

Hotels in Bulgaria could be winning more from conference tourism if conditions for such were properly developed, Tourists Analysis and Assessment Institute Director Roumen Draganov said.

Current losses totaled nearly 30 per cent of the expected revenue because of the lack of developments in the sector, Draganov told participants in Bulgaria- Dream Area forum.

Seaside resorts experienced the most serious problems, said Draganov as quoted by Bulgarian news agency BTA. Conference buildings there were few and abolishing the requirements for the availability of conference rooms in three and four-star hotels was a mistake, said he.

One of the options for developing conference tourism was organised activities, said Draganov. Among these were natives' conventions and community meetings, for example.

Gina Stoyanova, Executive Director of Sunlight Travel, said that revenue from conference tourism could be several times higher as wealthier people usually took part in such activities.

Another benefit was the fact that conference tourism could take place at any time of the year, not only during peak seasons, said Stoyanova.
