Corruption prevalent in Bulgaria's justice system- poll
Nearly 60 per cent of the Bulgarians questioned in a Justice Ministry survey said that corruption was prevalent in the justice sector.
Poll results showed that 30 per cent of the people were afraid of crime, Focus news agency reported. A quarter of the Bulgarians surveyed said they did not turn to police for help after becoming the victim of a crime.
Nearly third of the people who decided to refrain from contacting authorities said that the expenses related to the launching of à court investigation were too high.
People said that a number of trials were delayed because of corruption in the justice sector. Nearly 80 per cent of the people believed this was the reason behind slow procedures.
A poll carried out among court officials and magistrates showed that 43 per cent of them believed corruption existed in the justice sector.
Nearly 61 per cent of the magistrates questioned said that the number of employees in the justice system was insufficient and the qualification of some officials was below the needed level.
