Easter preparations in Bulgaria begin on Holy Thursday
As this year Catholic and Orthodox Easter coincide and will be celebrated on April 8 2007, on April 5 the world celebrates Holy Thursday.
According to Bulgarian tradition, early in the morning of Holy Thursday Bulgarians start dyeing eggs.
The first egg is coloured in red, because the colour symbolises the blood and suffering of Jesus Christ.
A family member symbolically draws a cross on the forehead and the cheeks all family members using this first coloured egg.
This egg is set aside and kept during the whole year to bringing health, luck and happiness. It is usually kept next to the icon in the house, if there is any.
People believe that they can read the future looking at the egg’s interior when the egg is broken on the next Holy Thursday.
The second egg is also dyed in red and is usually taken to the church. Other eggs are painted according to personal taste.
