Number portability service already available
Bulgaria’s three mobile phone operators M-Tel, Globul and Vivatel struck on April 10 the long-awaited number portability agreement, Bulgarian news agency BTA reported. The agreement attests that the networks of all operators have the entire instrumentality to introduce the number portability service.
On April 11, GloBul and MobilTel both announced in press releases that the portability service is already available for their subscribers.
The number portability procedure entails the following. A subscriber willing to migrate to an alternative mobile phone operator files an application to this effect. The activation of the new SIM card takes at least 12 working days.
According to experts, though, the procedure could take less than a week.
The number portability service is available throughout the European Union. In Germany, the network switch takes eight days for fixed line and mobile phone numbers alike. In Malta and Ireland, the procedure takes only a day. The change-over in Italy and Slovakia may even take 20 days.
To ensure number portability, the subscriber should first clear all payments due to their existing operators. In Bulgaria, the service per mobile phone number will cost five leva.
The Commission for Communications Regulation will oversee the number portability process. Should there be any problems, the procedure could be amended, deputy head of the telecom watchdog, Vesselin Bozhkov, told BTA.
