Creative Storage
The word “warehouse” (sklad, in Bulgarian) makes one think of a crammed, dirty, unwelcoming space with bold lettering announcing“staff only”. But this warehouse, Skladut, is far from it.
On the fourth floor of the former Madara printing house, above the Tea House at 11 Benkovski Str, it is the second showroom of Marticom furniture design house (the other is at 55 6-ti Septemvri Str). Housed in a sunlit, charmingly industrial space, this hybrid of an exhibition space and a retail area is home to original ideas and beautiful objects of contemporary design.
The showroom opened only on April 10, but word seems to be travelling fast, because there was human traffic up and down the stairwell to Skladut, the entrance to which is in the courtyard of the ex-factory – not exactly a place for chance encounters.
Visitors can find original furniture and home accessories (some beautiful glassware and ceramics included), browse interior design and fashion books and periodicals, and discover world brands like Bulo, Alias, Cassina and De Padova (of whose 800-euro steel-and-wood espresso machine this author dreams). Skladut is also the first Bulgarian venue for the design gurus of Established and Sons. The yellow press often ties the label to Stella McCartney because of her marriage to one of the founders, but the connection is inferior to Established and Sons’ leadership in low-budget design.
The 500 sq m showroom will also host exhibitions, fashion and design book parties and workshops, with the ambition to become a one-of-a-kind multi-functional art and design space in Sofia.
Skladut is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 8pm.
