Roman settlement in Bulgaria open to tourists

The Roman town Nikopolis ad Nestum, near the current town of Gotse Delchev, in South-Western Bulgaria, will be opened for tourists from June 1 2008 onwards, after its restoration and preservation.

The project for the restoration of the settlement started at the end of 2006 and would finish on May 31 2008, Focus news agency said. The project was funded under the European Phare programme for trans border co-operation between Bulgaria and Romania to stimulate culture, tourism and human resources in border regions. The project was worth 273 500 euro.

According to one of the co-ordinators of the project, Antoaneta Tosheva, the restoration and preservation project was almost ready. Three guards would see to the security of the settlement. Another three guides would be available for the tourists. The project management would install video cameras and the parking near the attraction was expected to be ready within days.
