Do you have any particular experience with movers, can you recommend someone?

It is always something different to learn from first-hand experience rather than from ads or the commercial materials presented. Personal views can also be distorted but at least can help someone form an opinion on actual experience.

So would you be keen on recommending someone, what worked best in your case?

By my Experience, it's AGS

Hi,

I have been using several moving company in Africa, england, eastern EU.
I have only 1 company to recommend, it's AGS, they have a branch in Sofia. I have been using them several times, it was always perfect ! I used as well local ones, and I not recomand it at all !!!
I have heard from some UK friends that Allied Pickford is not reliable for international moves because they do not have any owned branches abroad, even if they pretend the opposit (?). I heard as well that they invoice VAT on international moves, a friend checked and it apears tat VAT is not applicable at all !!! this is a way to get more money from our pocket I suppose...

By my experience AGS is the best I ever moved with because they are present everywhere through branches and really care about client, and there is a french manager, this make a huge difference on quality process. I don't believe that a BG sales see the quality on same standard as foreign one...

Well, this is my own experience !

Any Australians moved to Bg?
And can anyone tell me..Do Australians need a visa, I've read conflicting advice...my understanding is that they can stay for up to 90 in a six month perios. Is this correct?

No visa

Yes, Australians do not need visa, if they stay less than 90 days in Bulgaria. If you have a diplomatic passport, you would need a visa, but I presume this is not the case.
There are some requirements though concerning any foreigner entering Bulgaria. You could find more information on the site of Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry: http://www.mfa.government.bg/index.php?tid=4&item_id=10269
Good luck :)

I will try to be objective here. Follow the link to learn about some experience with AGS.

I don't care what you say below - you work for AGS, use the same terminology as on your other intervews on this media. Easy to find and understand you're a loser.

Just received a notice about the reply on my post, and I have to admit that it make me laught !!!

I have used 7 times this company in Africa and EU, with 200% of satisfaction !

It's the same in my business, car maker. We will produce 10.000 cars and 1 of them will have a none vital fabrication problem that will make 1 person unhappy. This person will contact a media to report the trouble, and then we loose 10.000 potantial clients !
Do you think by buying Mercedes or Porsche you will avoid mecanical troubles ? wrong !

This person was not lucky, that's all, or put down the price, and so the quality of service. Do you negociate a price when you go to buy Mercedes ;)
I am never trying to put down the rates, quality as a price. that's all. And we know this very well in car maker business.

Don't fly with Airbus, there was a crask in 2004, don't fly with Airbus, there was a crash in 2006, don't buy a Fiat, it is very bad quality cars...

I just tried to give a good information with a company that I used several time, not only once as this person.

Ciao !

Does anyone know the real truth concerning D Visas which I am now told have been eliminated for EU members. But I cannot find out how long you are allowed to stay in Bulgaria without Residence Card. You can apply for Res Card without D Visa I understand. This info has come from a lawyer who says the new law has now been published but I have yet to see details of the wording. DKR

From my experience it seems that Broadband and Cable TV providers are "Very Localised" some to a few streets or small areas in Sofia and "Local Knowledge" is required

The Best Way is to speak to your neighbours (or get a Bulgarian Speaker to do this as I did) and ask who supplied their service and if the service is good or not. Another way is to speak to the nearest Computer Shop as they will more than likely know

Hope this helps!

I agree with Doggy- first tell us where you plan to stay, as this for sure affects the number of options you have available. In most cities, even smaller ones, people offer rooms and apartments for rent, which usually turns out to be much cheaper than a hotel (and in some occasions more comfortable and cosy). The problem is that you have to look for such accommodation on the spot and can't really do much in advance.

I have now lived in Bulgaria over 3 years and it has been an uphill battle with the documentation, every 6 to 12 months with the visa and ID card. Apparently now when my visa expires as long as I ask for a 5 year visa I should automatically get it (so I am told). Things are getting so much easier year by year.

Hi Red!

There are plenty of Irish moving to Buulgaria! I live in a small village called Preselentsi in Dobrich region near Kavarna. My hous is on a crossroads and two of my neighbours (sisters) are Irish from Donegal. Actually, that makes three of us as I am Irish (Portrush), sorry four of us as one of their son's has also bought a place and, excuse my maths, theer is even another one, Norman, who is from my home town - Coleraine. Best bet to find aout about visa restrictions would be the Irish Embassy in Sofia.

Have a look at our website - www.bulgarianvillagehomes.com. On the Home Page under Village Information, click on Dobrich and Varna regions and you will find Preslentsi.

All the Best.

Maby off topic, but it is an alternative, have a garage sale before you move and buy new.
New country, new house, new life and you are helping the economy.
You will proberbly replace most of your stuff within the first couple of years anyway so why bother with the hastle and expense.
Pehaps some who have moved lock, stock and barrell can post to say what pecentage of stuff they have replaced and over what period say first year, second year or even what went straight in the "skip" when the wagon was unloaded

I know little about this subject but there are seveal providers and even some english speaking chanels easily availiable. As for advise on providers and packages that has to be a personal decision to find whats best for your viewing needs. Bulgaria is a huge country and satalite footprints vary across the country so advise for each area is different. Again with the internet, services vary so much that a simple post cannot answer your question. Questions are best resolved when you are in Bulgaria, service providers and other english speaking europeans (dont like to say ex pat now we are in euroupe) are a good place for advice as is the nearest bar to your property were if you dont get the answer you want just make some new friends and forget about the tv.Sorry this post is so negative.

Do not use The Removal Group when moving to Bulgaria

The worst experience I have ever had in my life was moving all our household and personal belongings to Bulgaria. We used a company called www.removalgroup.com and I would not recommend this company at all. When they came to collect our items they never had enough room on the vehicle. We had paid for 18 cubic metres and they only had room for 16 cubic metres as there was someone else furniture already on the truck. We then had to find somewhere else to put our items until they could pick it up. 5 weeks later it was picked up but only because I was chasing this up to be collected. Then when we got our goods delivered the truck driver opened up the back of his truck it looked as if it was going to a rubbish heap. My husband was very angry. It got offloaded and half of our items were damaged or missing. The 2 cubic metres that they collected at a later date was not there either. The customer service manager would not even speak to me. One of her colleagues told me I had to put it in writing which I think was a disgrace. We have gone through so much with this company. Please everyone do not use this company what so ever. It cost us a lot of money and stress. Because of this experience I would recommend to sell everything in the UK and buy new things when you get to Bulgaria.[/u]

Great plan! There are lots of other brits who want to buy without ever seeing the country beforehand. You should do quite well until the bubble breaks or until brits get smart, whichever happens first

Lovech is the first big town near where my village is, its even quieter than lovech.
I have already met a few villagers and met the lady mayor.
The only foreseable problem is being able to differentiate between true friendly people and those who are just along to see what they can get, I don't really blame then, I have been offered everything between logs - baby chickens and I was only there 7hrs.
I am quite lucky as there is an x foreign ministry worker whose english is very good.
I cant wait to leave england now, as I see the big brother scenario unfolding, or the totalitarean tiptoe some call it.
Everybody got there reasons for moving away from blighty!!!
Thanks for the offer off by the way of introductions etc, but I usually find my own way and I wouldn'y like to live in a colony so to speak, but would rather just blend in to the scenery.

British Cars For Sale!!!

Hello there, I'm organising a charity drive to Istanbul in early June. The plan was to sell our vehicles when we arrived in Istanbul but this is not possible due to import duty. As such we have 23 cars between 8-15 years old that we will be taking over the border to Bulgaria (MALKO TARNOVO) to sell or in some cases scrap.

There are some great cars amongst the group - Mercs, BMW's and we don't want a lot for the vehicles - most of them around the 200-600 Euro mark.

If anyone is interested please get in touch and tell me what type of car you are looking for. If you know anyone that might be interested please pass this info on. The only catch is you must me in Malko Tarnovo on Saturday 12th June to pick the car up.

Thanks

Hello Ann-Marie

I am sorry that such unpleasant event is the reason for you seek help here. Hope it'll work out in the best way for you.

Are you looking for a relocation service? Depending how many of your belongings you wish to move back to the UK, you may either hire such service and load them on a lorry, just a lorry section or even ship them (if you could wait few weeks) ...

It is important where are you located at the moment too. Some logistic companies could have room for your effects in one of their lorries, delivering Bulgarian goods to the UK ... but if you are too far away from Sofia or other major city, where these companies have offices - it might be a problem.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Bring it in as personal belongings and you won't pay a thing. (must be mentioned on the customs docs) cost will be around 2x50? in customs

Bring it in as trade and you'll be cheaper bying brandnew in BG. (you need EUR1 and other certificates)

Just put it in your car and the customs-officer will complain but let you pass as he sees it are personal belongings. Something under the table might help.

I would say just put it in the car. There are only borders for people, not for goods in the EU. Therefore it might be better if you could cross the border with a civilised EU country.

I just found this website by chance, and it looks very interesting, as the other forum I used seems to be full of spammers. I own a ond house near Sredets.

I have been recommended a building company called mekotek, and they have quoted for the work required, I have accepted the quote, and they are going to send me a contract, despite being recommended them, by a few people, and seeing their website www.mekotek.com is there anything I should be looking out for, as I am very carefull parting with my money. Any advice on what the contract should entail etc.. would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Just wishing you good luck with your rennovations.

You don't say if you live in bulgaria? Might be a good idea if you don't, not to tell them when you are due to come over for inspection trips. So that you can assess the quality of their work without them prepping things for your trip.

Also a time scale.

And if they discover something unexpected, what happens?

And out of interest as they are based both in the UK and Bg, what currency do they charge in?
Best of luck :)

Hi,

You will be a few k'ms away from us. We live just outside of Bourgas. Between Aitos and Bourgas. We are permanently here.

You may be lucky and find work via the internet before you come here, but usually it's a case of looking once your here. What kind of work do you do?

We build houses and do rennovation work, we are a family based company. it has taken 3 years for us to become established here, not just with clients but with suppliers. But all in all, I wouldn't go back to the UK. Our quality of life here is very high, the bank balance is very low. In the UK we had the same business, although it was primarily extension and rennovation work. Bank Balance high, quality of life low.

More than happy to pass on our mobile numbers, if you want a chat when your here. Or meet up for a drink if your in this neck of the woods.

Good luck with your move.

To your question - yes, there are supermarkets in Bourgas and the area, where you could find anything on your list .... but it is kind of silly, when moving to a country like Bulgaria, famous with the good conditions for agriculture and organic fruit&vegs, to end up shopping them from a supermarket just like back at home .... try the open markets to see what REAL TASTE means - Good Appetite! :)

Here in Bulgaria, quality of life comes first.

Vegtables, Fruit from the home garden.

Why settle for a drive in the country, when you should be there sorting out where the kitchen sink was planned to be not where someone else thought it should be.

Houses are houses

Homes are homes

A home is an individual statement.

I.ve just read your advert and felt compelled to answer. Mekotek were the so called builders we dealt with, they were a bunch of ill equipped cowboys or should I say gypsies. The completed work was sub standard but according to our agent this is bulgarian standard. That cop out phrase is constantly used. They did not possess the necessary tools for the jobs, and we had to let them use ours. When we pointed this out to our agent he said we were lying. We also had doors and windows blocked in and they knocked down a shed in our garden to use the bricks to do the job and then had the cheek to charge us for materials. We paid 650pounds to have the hall stairs tiled and a banister erected,14 of the tiles are broken and the banister shakes with the wind, we are still waiting for this to be repaired. We have since met another couple who are experiencing the same and would be happy to meet with you to share more information. My advise to you is don't touch them with a barge pole.

Hi, I was worried after your last post and contacted the office of Meko to speak with them.

Are you by any chance the chap that had a part renovation, and was present while the builders were there, and the same man that gave a snagging list, then paid the final money after you agreed all work was satisfactory?

AND THE BIG QUESTION ARE YOU A BUILDER??????

I know there is a lot of rivalry with ex pats now living in Bulgaria looking for a slice of the market.

I have paid a lot of money to this company, and feel uncomfortable with this issue now. Their website looks amazing, is your house on it?

Hi Mason,

You couldn't be more right. There is a lot of competetion here for building work. The down side of it is that most representitives of companies here are unethical, greedy and inept. Oh and most importantly liars.

I am horrified, that as a customer, you can contact a limited company and they have shared information about another client with you.

I would be interested to know where is your house? And do you work for them or own the company? or get paid a commission by them?

The average price here for laying tiles is 15 lev a square meter.

Firstly mason. I think you must ask yourself how ethical was it for this company to give you my details. But I have no problem with answering your questions.
Yes!! I am the man who had part renovation done. Yes!! I was there to oversee the work being carried out, just as well.We had a so called contract with Mekotek stating that the work would be complete within 40 days. They were 3 weeks over schedule, unfortunately we did not have a leg to stand on as the contract had not been notorised. Has yours?
Yes we paid the balance, but firstly suggested to them to take us to court for it as we were unhappy with finished results. We were then informed by this companies english counterpart, that this was not how things were done, and I quote. '' In Bulgaria thery do not take people to court, they deal with it their way.'' unquote. Please feel free to interpereate that as you see fit.
In reply to your last question, Yes!! I am a builder, a very good one, but let me assure you I am not plying for your buisness nor anyone else'I have more work than I can handle.
You asked for advice and I gave it freely and as honestly as I could. Whether you take it or not is up to you. I wish you all the best with whatever you decide.

kind regards.
p.s. You are still welcome to come and see the unfinished stairs that cost us 650pounds.

A small question?

If once, before investing in Bulgaria. You were taken seriously.ie Builder, engineer, etc.............

Why? Is it that your former/present occupation/profession doesn't count when you are seen as a 'cow for milking'.

Because you as the investor don't understand the language. And are then told that you have no choice but to accept
second rate finish at top notch prices!

Today I have spoken with foriegners and natives of Bulgaria.

It makes me really sad. To hear ordinary people who have made their money through hard work and have come here to retire.

Yet, for once in they're lives they do not speak of pounds or leva, they speak of thousands and in thousands. The amounts they have given to rogue people.

This is just an insult to all the 'just and true people' I have met here. And there are many.

Too start with if anyone needs a lawyer, who speaks english, in the
Bourgas area, I will be happy to email you his details.

Bulgaria, is a great country. But just like any other country where there are pioneers there are cowboys!!

Best of luck to all that visit her!!!

There are at least four supermarket chains here in Bourgas not counting, Metro.

Piccadilly, Billa, Sara (? I'm not sure of spelling), and EuroMarket. To name but four.

There is a bulgarian cash & carry and a number of fresh veg & fruit marketeers. Plus the fish market and meat market.

All really civillised,

Can only speak personally, but I'd buy a car over here. Some excellent 2nd hand deals to be found.
look for a good mechanic in your area, MUCH cheaper than the UK. Ask him to inspect any car you find for defects, and pay him a small fee for his trouble.

Right you are Jimmy,
I don't agree with the politics nor the direction Canada is heading as I see it but I do miss things.
The smell. I am overwhelmed by the smells we have here. In a good way. I walked out onto the balcony after a rain, it was just before dawn, I could smell BG AND something that reminded me of CDN. I think I miss the water smells from the cities I lived in in CDN.
I miss KD
I have an admission to stay with me when ever someone from CDN comes and needs a place to stay. A box of KD. I have one box that travelled from Halifax (N.S.) to me via a month's travel through the middle east.
I miss good Toronto "street meat". Nothing like a questionable hotdog from a vendor on Bloor St. One of the reasons I can leave such a place is because Toronto government has outlawed Mayonnaise and real cheese from these vendors; brainless heathens.
I miss aged beef from Alberta. Hmmm a cut of beef aged so well you could eat it raw.
I miss foreign movies. I don't see any now that I am in a "foreign" country. Most foreign movies I see now are Canadian.
Hellmans Mayonnaise ...
Hmmm I think that is it. I miss Lebanese Donairs but I missed them from Halifax when I was in Toronto so I am use to that.
That's it. An occasional trip "home" or the occasional visitor and I'm fine.

HI
We found to our horror when we bought our new house off plan what a bad bulgarian finish is like. The house is a great build but the finish was dier. When we approached the builder through the Agents we were told that if it is not explicit in the contract you have to accept it.
We have since learnt that lesson and we are in the process of building a house to sell. The builders we have found are fantastic and the attention to detail would put English to shame we have even had to pick the tile grout and edging . We have had everything written in the contract and we have had no problems.
We are also persuing a Bulgarian through the courts in connection with inferior work on our swimming pool he has defaulted on his contract.
I do not know what the outcome will be but according to our Solicitor his is guilty and he will have to re pay us. We shall see.

Well, my point of view is, everything depends of emotional and sensitive part of everybody. I divide people into two categories: practical and emotional.
For me, particularly, I always take , things that remind me for my home, my friends, my family, my childhood. Nothing too large, furnitures or sometnig like that. You know, the home is where is your heart, although our hearts always turn back us to our roots. The world now is a "global village", What is necessary to be happy?Just a cup of coffee with a friend, a shoulder of a favourite person and at least but not last, a health. The things don't make happy people, they just speak for their material world.
So, just take your favourite book and music disc and don't worry,in the world, there is always somebody, who is going to give you hand in difficult moment.(when you feel lonely, far away of home )

Communication is a huge problem in Bulgaria. 4 years ago I started a bussiness in a small city in south-east Bulgaria. Our orders depend on fax and internet. So far both have been terrible.

Fax - BTK: isn't receiving on automatic from digital telephone-systems (no full compatibility between analogue and digital) BTK denied any cooperation and we presumed 4 years long BTK installation was OK. We are very thankfull to BTK (NOT) for the loss of +1000 customers and an estimated 5M? turnover.

ADSL Escom: communists, pretending to be the best. They cut you off for no reasons, every weekend black-out (due to dynamic IP adresses that can't connect automatic to server after sleepmode, they always know better and we stink)
Other problems is the safe-line option (no online banking, or online payment possibilities), and outlook compatibility (only email on server) or from their highly spammed domain-name.

ADSL BTK: 4Mb installed recently and another big joke. They refused 2 months in a row to change a burned wire in their system (probably from lightning). Yesterday we got a promise it would be changed. When I don't know. I think it works good, but when there's a problem you're back to 0.

I would advise to ensure you have a digital telephone-central and connect to BTK 4Mb or 8Mb.
But BTK doesn't have any service at all. Call centers and hotlines are a joke. When experiencing problems, the cheapest is moving.
Other smaller ISP's like Escom (considered to be 1 of the bigger players) aren't capable (They hardly understand how to turn on a pc) and don't offer services that are considered to be standard.

When you want more information, feel free to PM me. regards

i guess i just viewed the move as an opportunity to start over, get back to the basics for a while, live simply. so far i've had good luck assembling a home here - it's a little bit piecemeal at this point, but i'm enjoying my new home :)

Don't worry to much. I also earn a (big) part of my living 'online' and I didn't have any problems with my BTK lines whatsoever. Maybe because it's Sofia and not a small town? Also no problem with the service. Heck, they did come to my place and I can get them coming with one call only, whenever I need to. Now I must admit that I know a few people around here... That always helps wherever you live on this planet. But I'll be glad to help you out with that and with all the other parts of moving here (like finding you a place, help with translations and documents etc. etc. etc.)

This would be my advise as well. Sofia is another world. It is uncomparable to the rest of Bulgaria. Stay out of the villages and when settling in a smaller town, make sure there's a digital telephone-installation.

Oh and never believe promisses. Because there's no time limit in Bulgaria. We got a promess they will SOON change from analogue to digital... That promess was only 3 years ago... (and they still are promessing)

Your best bet is cable, so when you find an apartment make sure you have a cable connection, I live in Plovdiv, I moved into my apartment on a Wednesday, by Friday I was connected to the cable network, TV and internet access, 4MB down 512KB up price 76 lev per month. Last thing take the advise of us all if you intend working from home and want a pleasant stressless lifestyle, don't live in Sofia, Try Plovdiv, it's cheaper and more pleasant than Sofia ever will be, the renovated 2 bedroom apartment with all mod cons in the center of Plovdiv costs 400 lev per month, with a landlord to die for, try that in Sofia.

Intro & bringing dogs from the US...

Hi everyone! Let me begin by introducing myself; I'll give you one guess to my name, hehe. I'm a freelance designer, and my husband also works in the computer industry. We're relocating to Sofia from the US in less than a month, and we'll be bringing our two small dogs with us.

I'm hoping to find someone who has experience importing their pets to Bulgaria. We've found a good deal of information about the process online, but I'm still nervous. Our dogs are small - but too big to ride in the cabin, and have never traveled by plane.

They're up to date on all their vaccinations, and are both microchipped. Despite these facts, what are the odds that they might be quarantined?

I know I would feel so much better if I could "speak" with someone who's gone through it. Any insight is much appreciated.

Thanks so much, guys. I'm really looking forward to making some new friends in Sofia and beyond. Great site you've got here!

Hi there,
I was told, and experience has led me to believe, that the national internet is brilliant but there is a bit of a problem with international internet because there is only one port (through Czech) out of the country. That is the information (about a year old now) that I was given. I have noticed a lot less "international line" disturbances in the past year or so but the speed seems to be about the same.
I would tend to agree with sheilanmikey and go with cable. Any large urban area will have good cable. BUT my 2 stotinki' worth would be to also have adsl backup if your biz depended on it. That is what I had set up when I first got here as my biz was a slave to the internet. The only problems we had were when the lines to Czech were toast otherwise we were cool and used the backup adsl with great success.
UPS is key too. There aren't as many electrical blackouts (or "lunch times" as I called them) as there were a year or two ago but they still happen.
HTH cheers

Hi there,
I brought what was important to me at the time.
Too many clothes, You can buy pretty much any of the essentials here without much mental harm but I have a hell of time finding my size so...

What I NEEDED for my kitchen: Again you can buy most things here but I needed my knives, mandolin (I haven't seen one here yet though the food mills are a lot cheaper here than at home, YAY), my copper bowl, Pepper grinders, french-coffee press, and metal sieve. I wish I had brought my pots and pans as it irks me to buy new ones of the same quality when I know mine are there, calling to me, saying, "Heat Me!".
It was an easy decision to leave my electrical kitchen gadgets because of the N/A and EU power differences. Though I miss my Cuisinart whizzer/blender thing.

My bar equipment: I am a purist when it comes to bar stuff so two proper shakers, strainer, one bottle opener, bottle tips, olive sticks, and cool bar crap from Ikea. Yes, I brought that Ikea Ice Crusher "Chippen" all the way from Canada.

Books: Don't bring more than 3 and don't expect to read those books you have been "putting off". I brought at least three such books I haven't touched in the three years I have been here. I have bought, locally, or was given everything I have read while here.
Music, I brought as many cd's as I could with those large 48-cd carriers and left the cases at home. It is still a hoot to see the expression on Bulgarian's faces when they see how much music I have paid for. Next time I do this I will just fill up a hard drive and bring that.
You really only need to bring hard drives here unless you have a favourite Laptop. It is easier to buy a PC here.
My only superfluous luxury was my drawing supplies. It was worth it too. I would have gone insane by the time I figured out how to outfit myself again locally.
Food: I brought vanilla, KD, REALLY good dried Chicken Broth, and maple syrup ('natch).

HTH,Cheers

My husband is a site Manager for New build/Commercial but is a qualified civil Engineer, does anybody know of any company that would benefit from his experience and will accept english speaking!

Hello,

Both of you have my sympathy. I brought my 17 yr old out with me when I moved and he found things difficult until he started mixing with local youngsters. A football helped, as none of the lads speak English and as he's off to Uni in September he's not putting a lot of effort into learning Bulgarian. One girl speaks good English, which helps, but they all seem to find a common language going for (delightfully innocent!) walks together in the evenings when it's hot. They play about in the river, make funny picnics and drink only the occasional beer.

My 19 yr old and his girl come out in October, but I don't have any worries about them adjusting as they're that bit older and interested in everything around them. 16 is a tricky age to be (I was awful!) and to live with (I've had 3 at home in different parts of the world...)
  Wishing both of you well,

Thinking of moving to Bulgaria

Hi I have just joined this site in the hope we can get some useful info on moving to Bulgaria. We are a couple in early 40s and one set of retired parents that want to leave the UK behind us. We are thinking of Spain or Bulgaria, Spain we know alot about and had experience of living there, but Bulgaria is a whole new adventure. Anyone with any thoughts of areas we should come out to visit? We are thinking of buying property nearby the Black Sea approx 10km near golf courses or maybe a property with a fishing lake where we can also do B & B and have some land to build on and a place to do up for ourselves. We would love anyones advice or thoughts on this.Thank in advance. :D

Recently I did read a lot about how the black sea area is so overbuild that prices (and profits) are down the drain, leaving several hotels etc. in problems. The other part of your plan (near golf course or lake or a hotle/bread & breakfast in general) could work finely, but maybe it's an idea to look into another area of the country.

Bulgaria is full of chances, nice people and beautiful nature. I think it is a good place to move to (that's why I did exactly that not too long ago).

Good luck with your planning and feel free to contact me anytime if you want me to find out something for you or if you have questions that I might be able to help with (I'm not very good at astro-physics, but in a lot of other areas I know some things :) )

Hi Di,
If you'd like to buy a proparty near Black Sea you can search for it near Varna or Bourgas.Varna is more popular among foreigners and many British live around, not only in the sity but in the small villages around. A few golf courses is about to be built in the area so you'd better go and check.Bourgas is also a beautiful city, not so developed, but better beaches around and a bit lower prices...Good luck!

Hi Shireen

I have mailed you the price list on your PM in more detail.

Here is also a guideline for everyone else.

The following prices do not include delivery or loading of the container at a UK address . Delivery of the container can be estimated at around £250 -£300 but the packing is the responsibility of the customer. When the container is delivered there is a free 3 hour period for loading and £40 per hour thereafter.

A separate price can also be given for delivery to a Bulgarian address.

The cost for sea freight and inland haulage insurance is based on the value of the goods and is 0.5% of the total value of the goods.

20 foot container - £2,098.00
40 foot container - £2,580.00
40 foot container (High Cube) - £3,250.00

THE ABOVE PRICES INCLUDE:
- SEA FREIGHT
- ENTRY AND destination terminal handling charges
- ENTRY AND destination documentation charges
- ENTRY AND destination customs CLEARANCE (T12)

THE PRICES MAY VARY SLIGHTLY ON A MONTHLY BASIS. AN EXACT QUOTATION WILL BE ISSUED UPON REQUEST AND WILL BE VALID FOR 30 DAYS.

If I can be of any further help, please don't hesitate to contact me on 0886 791 016.

Moving to Bulgaria

Hi, I am a US citizen. Basically I am 21 year old and I want to move out of the US. I have been to europe before but not eastern europe. Bulgaria looks like a great place, I am very interested in visiting and maybe moving there. I am a professional poker player, I play poker on the internet. I also bet sports. I have been doing this for almost 3 years and I make a good living. The US has cracked down hard on this recently however and it is harder to make money and move money around. Also, I am very sick of my home city in the US and I would love to experiance something new and live abroad for atleast a couple years.

I have some questions...

Is there a lot to do for young person in Bulgaria?
What city should I move to?
Would I have a hard time making friends?
Would I have a hard time dating?

I just want to know as much as possible and maybe I will visit and who knows live there someday. I have heard you can get a residency permit also if you have 3,000 in a checking account there.

All help is appreciated. Thanks, I hope I don't sound like a jerk or something. I really am interested in doing this.

Furniture Packages... advice much needed...

Hello

I have just bought an apartment near Nessebar and my agent has just come back with details of the developers furniture package, however it seems a bit costly... definately more than I was originally quoted.

So I'm considering a different package supplier and have come across a company called 'Furniture Shop Varna' trademark of Home Solutions Ltd.

Has anyone any experience of this company or infact any general advice when it comes to furniture packages?

I am likely to be renting the apartment out for several weeks of the year and am inclined to go for a budget package, but am concerned cheap looking furniture could bring the rental down... is it actually worth paying the extra for a more expensive package? or will i end up kicking myself if furniture is damaged?

any advice would be much appreciated.
thanks

Hi Nicola

How about asking for a refundable deposit - that way if the furniture does get damaged you can keep the deposit. Just a thought.

There is a guy I know who is also doing furniture packages up in Bansko and the Black Sea. His prices are far better than most of these developers/agents because they take a commission. Give him a go anyway, he has lots of brochures to show you and when you choose a package - he'll come back with a price.

His name is Mac and his number is 0886 645537.
Good luck

Hi Joseph,

Bulgaria is a fast developing country and there's a lot for young people to do, especially in the cities. My advise is to move to Sofia (the capital) or Varna (the biggest city at the Black Sea, where many forigners live). It's not hard making friends here, people are very friendly and open to new encounters. Most young Bulgarian speak English very weel so you'd not have any problems communicating but if you're planning to stay here for longer you'd better try to learn the language.About dating - be careful...Bulgarian women are pretty and fancy looking : ) I do not know what are visa regulations for americans but I will a friend and get back to you.You can also think of starting a website for bets here, it's still not that popular.

Hello,Joseph.
I think, you gonna be in love with Bulgaria. The people are friendly and you wouldn't have any language limitations, because a lot of the people speak English. As Doggy have written to you, it's better to move in Sofia, or in any other big city , like Varna, Bourgas, Plovdiv. In the country is lovely, but there aren't a lot of opportunities for a proffesional realization.
In my opinion, the style of life here is different from the lifes in our countries. It's normal, of cource. I mean, here, the people, can have fun better than us. For instance, if you come in Bulgaria, it's interesting to see a traditional Bulgarian wedding.
And I will allow to give you another advice too, the country is small, but the nature is picturesque, if you love to travel, do it, there is what to see and enjoy.
Of cource, there are things, which I dislike here, like traffic, drivers, the bureacracy......but, where, there aren't?

Hi
The only advice so far has been not to take a route through Serbia into Bulgaria so we are avoiding Serbia and driving to Romania and then to Bulgaria. It appears you can have trouble at the border with bribes and if you are taking any goods they try to charge you taxes to take them through there border into Bulgaria.
If you have a Sat Nav you should be fine we are using the Michelin route finder. Good luck with your trip!

Look out for driving times and speeding. Hungarians are obsessed with them cards.

Without trailor, good condition truck and no overload drive through:
- Belgium: Ghent - Brussels - Hasselt
- Holland only 20km
- Germany: Aachen - Koln - Frankfurt - Nurnberg - Passau
- Austria: Linz - Wien
Hungaria: Gyor - Budapest - Szeged (after that offroading starts) - Mako
Romania: Arad - Bucurest - Giurgiu
Bulgaria: Ruse - Varna - Burgas

In case of a trailor go through Czech rep and Slovakia and avoid Austria.

Forgot to mention that the 'vignette' in Hungaria is only valid for the same day for over 3.5 Ton.

Some different advice;

Hi there,

It doesn't matter where you live because of your business just as long as you can get reliable internet. Head to the Black Sea if you like water (I wish I had) or Plovdiv or Sofia are both a lot of fun for bars and meeting people. The internet in Sofia is okay. There is the occasional downtime but you can work around that with backup.

My different advice might help you with the poker:
Talk to your bank before you come here and make sure they know you could be banking from Bulgaria. Same with the credit cards. The Banking system is different in Europe (IBAN) than the US so find out from your bank how to send wires "home".
Make sure you have a Moneybookers account. They will require a Bulgarian Bank account in leva if you are here and want to cash out. Eventually you might be able to use a non-US credit card online in the poker rooms but you might not be able to use if from Bulgaria. Make sure to have enough money in your moneybookers account before you come because it will be a while before you can fund it from here (it can take a while to set up an account and/or you will only be able to fund your moneybookers by bank.
The last I heard there is only one real poker room in Sofia. The rest were "persuaded" to close by the remaining poker room. There is a community of poker players here who have a traveling tournament circuit ranging from 10 Euro to 500 euro buyins.
There are two people I know who know more about poker here. One is a fellow countryman of yours, a pro-online poker player from Oregon, and the other is a local who runs a website igrach.com who is also living off poker in Bulgaria. The site is in Bulgarian but he does speak English. Making contact with these two is easy when you get here.
Hmmm I think that is it....
Cheers

Hi Everyone, I'll be moving to Sofia full time in a couple of weeks and I wondered if anyone knew of a cheaper car rental place. Most of the ones I see cost 500 Euros a month for the smallest car. Has anyone found a better deal?

On the airport there are the usual scam-cabs. Go out and instruct a cab to drive you to a "change". There you can change at 1.95 leva / 1 euro + you can swap to a normal cab. You are in need of leva to have cheaper anything.

Instruct the 2nd cabdriver "Rent a car eftino" (cheap). He will drive you around and stop at various places untill you will meet your budget. You must be able to find a rental like: older VW Passat, Audi 80, Opel Vectra for 20 leva.

I did this 1st time I landed in BG. It worked fine and found a 18 leave Audi 80 after 1 hour only. Afterwards I just sms'd time, date, flight number, budget, "sofia airport" and sign details to this same company. Every time there was a car waiting for me upon arrival.

Try this cell-number: +359.888.605.612
It worked 5 years ago...

In Varna, Maria Boneva is on the approved list of solicitors at the British Consulate.
Probably the Estate agents with offices in the main streets are better. But even the famous ones you should treat with caution. I chose a viewing from the "book". When we returned to the office after viewing, the price had increased by 4000 euros. When I pointed to the old price in the book, they said it was a mistake.
And when I finally chose a new build from another agency,as I sat in the solicitor's office to sign the contract, the price went up another 3000 euros to go towards the VAT.

relocating to bulgaria

we are aiming to get out of the rat race in the UK.
we have been looking at various websites and have visited the country - impressed we are!
we'd like a property - preferably an older one which we could knock down and rebuild. this is based on seeing property - stating a ' little repair or in need of renovating'
our background is one in health and social care - people with learning disabilities. therefore we don't mind hard work or graft!
option 1 -
we'd like a place to offer breaks for carers and or clients and therefore require a place near the coast to offer entertainment and take advantage of the great beaches
option 2 -
a place in the country (not miles away from the airport- burgas -or coast. less than an hour drive) to offer the above but to maybe cater for walkers/fishing/artists/peace and quiet!
the property -
a) cheap enough to knock down and rebuild!
b) minimum of 3 bedrooms
c) potential to extend if this takes off!

can anyone recommend an area to accommodate our requirements?
can any one also recommend a good builder?
is there anyone who has bought, demolished and rebuilt?
cheers!

i would disagree with most of the advise above :P

i would definitely ___not go with either adsl or cable for a few simple reasons;
as far as adsl is concerned: btc is evil - they are not very competent and their service is overpriced.

as for cable; with cable your line-of-dependance or the food-chain becomes way too long. your internet connection depends on the electricity company __and the cable tv operator ___and cable internet provider (which may or may not be the same company as the cable tv operator, but in any case would probably be different department and therefor might as well be on a different planet) all doing their work at the same time .... too many ifs and maybes for you to depend on - at least in this reality.
i've had cable internet about 2 years ago and had endless prolbems, more than half the time i would have no connection at all because someone, somewhere up the food-chain was "out on luch" ...

and don't expect servicemen to work outside office hours either ... :)

you best bet is lan net, though you might have to change providers a couple of times, but in most places you have a good choice anyway .
some are good, some are bareble, others ought to be used for target practise at a shooting club :P
some providers will have network problems everytime there is a storm or heavy rain (their boxes are not protected against either heavy water fall or lightning).
i used to have such a provider, change to a different one (this takes about 1 day), and have not had any problems since.
i pay 30 leva per month, i have 30+Mbit on the local network and i think it was 4 on the international network.
as it is not asynchronous and i really do get that speed, this makes it several times cheaper than adsl.

as for the local vs. international network; bg isps have long ago agreed to have full speed ethernet connections between their networks, where they don't charge each other for traffic. this has created a very fast local network which is fairly reliable.
there are 3 or 4 companies that have access to international lines. those have limited speeds and are meetered.
as a result, pricing of internet in bulgaria is different for local and international network.

i have to say it has become much much better, cheaper and more stable in recent years, but yeah, stay out of small places, go for sofia, varna or plovdiv, i'd say

anyway, just my 0.02 eurocent :)

I need to move a small quantity of my stuff from UK to Plovdiv in the very near future. Is anyone planning on using a container to move their stuff, and might be able to sell me a bit of space.....approx 3 cubic metres and 250 kg max. I have it all stacked in my caravan at the moment and was planning to drive it over, but it a bit too much for my Peugeot, with passengers, to tow.

Any suggestions will be happily taken. :)

Hi Di

just came across your August post, but thought I might add my two pence worth anyway. I am Australian but have lived in the UK for the last four years or so. I moved here to Plovdiv, in central BG about four months ago, after visiting a few times. There any many great places to live, apart from the coastal regions, which are rapidly becoming overcrowded, and overpriced! In the central and southern mountain regions, one can still find great property for sale at a reasonable price.....from 2grand upwards to about 15 grand [GBP]. I was offered a two storey house on 1500 sq metres yesterday, which I could have moved into after two weeks of clean up. Asking price was 8500 [GBP]. The views from that house went on forever, and it was only a two hour drive from the city. I hope you come over and have a really good look around...............you will love what you find!

Cheers

Hi cat320
thanks for the response. I will be back in the UK about 13th or 14th, depending on flights, and will stay there until I get my stuff moved. Actually, I probably overestimated the size; it's probably more like 1.5 cubic metres. A few work tools, books, clothes etc. Fairly heavy tho'!

It will be great if we can arrange something. Would you like my phone number?

WE ARE WANTING TO HEAR FROM FAMILIES WHO ARE LOOKING AT MOVING ABROAD TO SET UP A NEW BUSINESS FOR NEW TV SHOW

Daisybeck Productions in England are currently looking for families who are in the process of moving abroad to set up a new business.

Over 200,000 families leave the UK every year. We are looking for families who are looking to move abroad and set up their own business.
Hi
I AM SORRY TO GIVE YOU MORE CONFLICTING MESSAGES BUT.
I TRAVELLED HERE FROM THE U.K BY CAR WITH FRIENDS AND ALONE SEVERAL TIMES USING THE SERBIA ROUTE.
I HAVE TO SAY I HAD NO PROBLEMS AT ANY TIME EXCEPT NOT HAVING ENOUGH EURO OR SERB MONEY FOR THE TOLL ROADS. THE SERBS LET US THROUGH IN THE END WITHOUT PAYING AS ONCE ON THE HIGHWAY YOU CAN NOT GET OFF WITHOUT PAYING.
YES YOU NEED A GREEN CARD AND YOU CAN GET THIS FROM SOME U.K INSURANCE COMPANIES.
DO NOT TAKE THERE WORD YOU ARE COVERED YOU MUST HAVE IT WRITTEN ON THE DOCUMENT AND IT MUST BE GREEN NOT FAXED ONTO WHITE PAPER.
I would check with the home office at present as there has been in country problems/conflict.

Now Romania was an absolute nightmare at the border and the journey was awful, you have to pay at the bridge and make sure you have road tax, they will let you in no problems but will fine you at the other end without one.

I use the overnight ferry from Hull to Zeebrugee
or Dover to Dunkirk it is closer, quieter and cheaper, takes 2 hours, book on line with ferry bookers

I have lived and worked in the Varna area for 3 years if I can advice or assist you further with your home search please contact me good luck Jen

we are getting conflicting reports and advice concerning planning permission.
if there is property on the land - which we knock down and start again - do we require planning permission. we are aware that if there is no property and just buy the land, then planning permission (for brits) is difficult to obtain - any advice would be gratefullt recieved
thanks
